Speak Dog, Speak!

I've been working on our original website Oyate Ta Olowan. We've been working on adding digital downloads to the site, but it's still a challenge. Oyate is a public radio series that we did on traditional Native American music. We did 52 half hour shows and traveled over 100,000 miles collecting music from all over the Americas. It was a while ago, but people still seem to love it, so we keep offering the shows for sale.

It's all a part of our little press Many Kites Press. Life is so amazing, and so full, but we keep on trucking. I hope things are going well for all of you, and that continue to create wonderful things. Later, Milt Lee

Every year, we have a winter stock show here in Rapid City. For those of you who live on the coasts, a stock show is where folks who raise cattle, horses, sheep and like that come to auction their best animals. It’s also where folks can see what’s new in the livestock industry. There are piles and piles of folks that attend. I’m told that Rapid City’s show is 2nd only to the Denver National. I’m going to do a couple of pieces from the stock show. I think I need to do one on all the paraphernalia that cowboys and cowgirls just can’t live without. Cowboy UP!

Last week, I went down to Red Cloud Indian School to watch the Red Cloud Crusaders play the Little Wound Mustangs. For those of you who don’t live on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Red Cloud was the guy who defeated the United States Cavalry back in 1868, and later signed a treaty. Little Wound was another Lakota warrior that fought at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, where the Lakotas kicked Custer’s butt.

But that’s old news. Last Thursday, it was a different battle. On the rez, B-ball is a very big deal. Most everybody loves a great game, and I was pretty sure that Red Cloud was going to win, but I had to see this kid from Little Wound play - Brice Hornbeck. I wasn’t disappointed.

This is a video I did for a very good organization here in Rapid City - SANI-T - the Society for the Advancement of Native Interests Today. Since then I’ve been reading Mohammad Yunus’s book - Creating a World Without Poverty - Social Business and the Future of Capitalism. It’s a wonderful book, and points to a whole new direction from that of this video. But I still like this piece. It shows that poverty is not really something that anybody chooses consciously. It’s 10 minutes long, so you might want to get your slippers on before you watch it.
